We’ve done the stressful part, so you can sit back and continue browsing our tiny home gallery.

And when you pick a model (the Napa?! Are you going with the Napa?!), here’s what you’ll need to know about tiny house insurance!

Tiny House Insurance

Can you get insurance on a tiny house? Absolutely! And we would definitely recommend you do so first thing. After all, a tiny house is a home, and you wouldn’t go without home insurance, right?

But just because a tiny house is a home doesn’t mean you can get a traditional homeowner’s insurance policy.

In fact, you probably can’t. This is where people start cursing Google and wondering how in the heck people get to the part where they can relax and enjoy the tiny house lifestyle. But don’t worry; you can buy tiny home insurance!

Shopping for tiny home insurance will go so much easier if you understand one (tiny!) thing.

Tiny houses are considered personal property and not real estate since they are not permanently affixed to land.

And in the eyes of most insurance companies, this makes them “not a home” and, therefore, ineligible for a traditional homeowner’s insurance policy.

Someday, the world will catch up and realize that tiny houses are homes, but in the meantime, here are some places where you can buy insurance for tiny houses!

Tips for Purchasing Tiny Home Insurance

  1. Even if a company offers insurance that will cover a tiny house, they may not call it a “tiny house insurance policy.” In fact, they probably don’t. It’s more likely that you will be getting an RV insurance policy or even mobile home insurance
  2. When shopping for tiny house insurance, it helps to remember that not everyone knows what a tiny house is at this stage of the game. You might say “tiny house,” and the insurance salesperson could assume you’re referring to a small traditional house. So remember to clarify! (And also know when to just call your tiny house an “RV” for the sake of the conversation!
  3. Read your policy carefully! Sometimes policies will only cover a tiny house when it’s stationary. Others won’t protect you in the event of wind damage. Reading an insurance policy can be tedious, but it’s worth settling in with a good cup of coffee and giving it a read-thru at least once before you sign on the dotted line. Don’t forget to source separate transportation insurance if it’s not included in your policy!
  4. Insurance policies and prices are always changing, so be sure to shop around before you settle on an insurance policy for your tiny home.
  5. Once you have your policy, it’s best to keep a physical and digital copy of it handy. Hopefully, you’ll never need it, but if you do, you’ll want it to be somewhere you can access it easily!
  6. Remember not to get overwhelmed. We know that’s easier said than done, but our goal at Mint is to be your ultimate source of support throughout your tiny home journey. So if you need help, remember that we care and are only a phone call away!
